The short answer: Moldavite is a finite resource. It formed in a single meteorite impact around 15 million years ago and no new moldavite is being created. It is still being found, mainly in the Czech Republic, but known deposits are increasingly depleted, which is one reason prices have risen. It won't disappear overnight, but every genuine piece is part of a limited supply.

Why moldavite is finite

Most crystals form through geological processes that are still happening somewhere on Earth. Moldavite is different. It was created in one event, the impact that formed the Nördlinger Ries crater in Germany. The glass that landed in its strewn field is all there is, and all there will ever be.

Where moldavite is still found

Moldavite is still found in the Czech Republic, mainly in South Bohemia and western Moravia. It lies buried in layers of sand and gravel, so finding it takes time, skill and permission to work the land. As the most accessible deposits are worked out, finding new pieces becomes harder.

What depletion means for prices

When a limited supply meets growing demand, prices rise. Moldavite has become one of the most sought-after stones in the crystal world, and prices have climbed as a result. Large, beautifully sculpted pieces have become especially scarce.

What it means for fakes

Rising prices and limited supply have also led to a flood of fake moldavite, usually coloured glass moulded to look raw. The scarcer the real thing becomes, the more important it is to buy from a seller who knows exactly where their moldavite comes from.
