Moldavite FAQs: 15 Questions Answered

We hear a lot of questions about moldavite, both online and at our pop-up events. Here are quick, honest answers to the ones that come up most.

1. What is moldavite?

Moldavite is a natural green glass, called a tektite, formed when a meteorite struck southern Germany around 15 million years ago.

2. How old is moldavite?

Scientists place the impact that created moldavite at around 14.7 million years ago.

3. Is moldavite a crystal?

Not technically. It's a natural glass with no crystal structure, but it is treasured alongside crystals in spiritual practice.

4. Is moldavite from space?

Not quite. It is made of Earth's own rock, melted by a meteorite's impact. It was born from a cosmic event, but it's made of our planet.

5. Where is moldavite found?

Mainly in the Czech Republic, in South Bohemia and western Moravia, with smaller amounts in Germany, Austria and Poland.

6. What does moldavite mean spiritually?

In crystal traditions, moldavite is known as the stone of transformation. It is linked to change, awakening and the heart chakra.

7. What is the moldavite flush?

It's a term for the intense feelings some people describe when they first work with moldavite. Read our gentle guide to the moldavite flush.

8. Can moldavite get wet?

Yes, briefly. A quick rinse in lukewarm water is fine. Avoid soaking, harsh chemicals and sudden temperature changes.

9. Can moldavite go in the sun?

Moldavite is a stable glass, so brief sunlight is fine. Many people prefer to cleanse it in moonlight instead.

10. How hard is moldavite?

It's around 5.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than quartz, so store it separately to avoid scratches.

11. Can I sleep with moldavite?

Some people keep it beside the bed, but because it's described as intense and can be linked to vivid dreams, many prefer to keep it out of the bedroom at first. For jewellery, take it off before sleep to protect the piece.

12. Why is moldavite so expensive?

It's rare, finite and in high demand. Read why moldavite is so expensive.

13. How can I tell if moldavite is real?

Look for a soft, varied green, a deeply sculpted surface and worm-like inclusions under a loupe, and buy from a seller who knows where it comes from. Read our full buyer's guide.

14. Does real moldavite glow under UV light?

No. Genuine moldavite doesn't fluoresce under UV light, so a strong glow suggests treated or artificial glass.

15. Where can I buy authentic moldavite in Australia?

At Pure Lightness, our moldavite comes from a trusted collector in the Czech Republic we've worked with for over 20 years. Every piece comes with a certificate of authenticity, and we're Australian owned and operated.
